The gift is only part of the gesture. Often, it’s the few words that come with it that tell someone why you chose it for them.
You don’t need to write a long letter. A particular memory, an honest thank-you, or a wish for their next chapter can be enough.
Be specific about the person.
Instead of “You’re amazing,” tell them what you notice. The way they bring people together. The courage it took to begin again. The time they showed up when you needed someone.
Look toward what comes next.
A new home, a retirement, a first business, or an ordinary birthday can all be a beginning. Write a wish for what you hope the next chapter brings them, without making it an expectation.
Sound like yourself.
A familiar expression, a shared joke, or the name only you call them can make a message feel more personal than any polished sentence.
Choose a thoughtful piece. Add your own words. Let the rest be theirs.
